The impact of financial illiteracy is not lost on the American public. 89% of Americans agree that lack of financial education contributes to some of the biggest social issues our country faces, including poverty (58%), lack of job opportunities (53%), unemployment (53%), and wealth inequality (52%).

Americans indicated they wish they had better money management skills, according to a Charles Schwab survey. When asked what they would teach their younger selves about personal finance based on what they know today, Americans said the value of saving money (59%), basic money management (52%), and how to set financial goals and work toward them (51%).

From the survey, it is apparent that every person in America should be taught the fundamentals of money management including budgeting, saving, avoiding debt, setting financial goals and investing.

Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz recommends five key steps every American can take to help shore up their finances during this period of global health crisis and economic uncertainty.

  • Start an emergency fund (or add more to it) to help protect yourself against an unexpected drop in income or expense shock. Set aside whatever you can – every little bit counts. Try to aim for $1,000-$2,000 to get started, and then work your way up to 3-6 month worth of essential expenses over time.
  • Create a budget to help you prioritize and assess your financial resources. Self-isolation has led to different spending patterns for many people, including cutting back on what we may have previously thought of as “essential.”
  • Create a financial plan to help you navigate from where you are to where you want to be. You don’t need to have a lot of money to need a financial plan. Consider it a roadmap to reach your financial goals, whether that’s to pay off debt, build savings, or make a large purchase.
  • Ask for help if you’re struggling. Given the scale of this economic crisis, the government, lenders and creditors are trying to work with borrowers through this difficult time. Don’t hide from creditors – that can make things worse.
  • Focus on what you can control. You can’t predict or control the market, but you can control how you manage your investments, your savings rate, having a financial plan and how you react to events.

1. Create a plan

Maybe your goal is to buy a first home, so start with some research to determine exactly what dollar amount you’ll need and when. 2. Create a support network

3. Be flexible and change things up

If you’ve focused on belt-tightening, think about how you can bring in additional cash to allow for some breathing room and an occasional treat. 5. Prepare for the unexpected

Life throws us curves, and it’s not unusual for a training program to get off-track for any number of reasons. Our financial goals can also be at risk, such as from unexpected home or auto repairs, a job loss or an injury. Purpose of Saving

Save for the long term. Saving and investing are a marathon. To power through saving and investing, you need purpose, patience and stamina.

As a general rule, it’s recommended that individuals save and invest 15% of their gross income into a retirement fund or funds like a 401(k), 403(b), IRA, etc. The exact amount depends on the individual, but the sooner individuals begin saving, the better.

Delaying saving until you have more money to contribute could mean less funds in the future, as your investment won’t have as much time to earn compounding interest.

The impact of compounding is greater the earlier you start saving. You’ll earn not only from the money you invest but also from previous earnings. Not to mention, the sooner you work savings into your budget, the easier it will be to live within your means and prioritize savings in the future.

Most Americans don’t feel prepared for retirement. Additionally, 18% of people who earn more than $100,000 say they live paycheck to paycheck which makes it difficult to save for retirement, according to a survey of 8,000 workers by global advisory firm Willis Towers Watson. Frankly, the problem is simply that Americans aren’t saving enough.

Experts say there are ways to up your retirement savings, even if you’re feeling financially stretched. First, look for ways to slash your current spending to free up extra cash or consider a side gig to earn more.

Automate your savings is about setting aside a portion of your earnings that would go directly into either a bank account or a retirement plan, depending on your financial goals and plan. You can also set automatic transfers from your checking to savings accounts to fund important goals and create automatic bill pay so you never forget to handle a fixed expense. With an automatic transfer of a portion of your earnings, you’re effectively paying yourself first as a means to save money, and at the same time, you will not really miss the cash you’re socking away.

Asset allocation is designed to help an investor take short-term fluctuations more in stride.

When you divide your money among a variety of asset classes — stocks, bonds, real estate and cash — you can potentially smooth the ups and downs of financial markets. Diversifying your investments within the major asset classes and investment styles can help balance out a portfolio.

Asset allocation enables you to own a wide selection of investment types to potentially benefit when one asset class does well and limit the downside when another asset class does not. We live in a world fraught with headline risk and conflict, something that will be ever-present. This fact will always be an integral part of the investment landscape. Those who exit or try to “time the market” tend to miss a significant rally. Those who remained invested or rebalanced towards equities tended to boost their returns during a market rally.

The length of time an investor is in the market can make a difference in the amount they will save and invest to potentially grow their investments. Society tends to attribute personal and professional success to the acquisition of material things and the accumulation of wealth. Research shows that our brains are a goal-seeking organism.  Whatever personal or financial goals we give our subconscious mind will allow it to work night and day to achieve them. However, one goal isn’t good enough for our subconscious minds.

Some goals take longer to achieve than others, like buying a house or saving for retirement. If you spend years working toward only one objective, you’re likely to get discouraged when it doesn’t happen right away.

But when you have multiple goals you’d like to achieve, goals that align with your values and beliefs, you have more to strive for, and more opportunities to check those goals off your list. And the accomplishment you feel every time you complete a goal will inspire you to accomplish even more of them

Actions overcomes fear

Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul™, states categorically that “the biggest reason most people don’t achieve their goals and realize their dreams is that they don’t take action, and the number one reason people don’t take action is fear.”

One of the biggest mistakes investors regularly make when goals and a plan are absent is to confuse investing with stock picking. Ask many people how their money is invested and they quickly tell you the latest hot stock they’ve purchased and the investment thesis that explains why they think it’s going to take off.

Saving for retirement and building an emergency fund should be the highest priorities, followed by other long-term financial goals, like college, travel, or a house.
