Visualization is one of the most powerful tools you can use to accomplish any goal you set for yourself. Visualization can be applied to help you improve your performance and be successful in all aspects of your life.

Visualization works because when you visualize, your mind and body don’t really know the difference between what you visualize and reality. When you visualize your goal, you create the thoughts, focus and energy that will help to pull that goal towards you.

The Power of Visualization.When you visualize, your body and mind react as if they were true. Many people believe that when you believe something to be true, you attract it to you – you make it true.

However, believing something to be true doesn’t necessarily make it happen. For many people taking action is challenging due to lack of confidence or a lack of belief in their goal. Visualization, because it taps directly into these emotions, can strengthen your belief in yourself, in your abilities and in your goals.

Additionally, visualization helps paint the scene so you can better plan and prepare for success. When you visualize your success as reality you can also visualize your path to get there.

Before taking the stage to speak to a large audience, Matt Mayberry, Maximum Performance Strategist and a former NFL linebacker, always picture himself giving the “perfect” speech. He would begin weeks in advance by picturing the audience and the positive reaction from the crowd. 

Top performers, among many others, have mastered the technique of positive visualization and openly credit it as a success tactic. Practice makes improvement. Practicing visualization isn’t just a fun exercise – the better you become at visualization the faster you will achieve the success you desire.

When you think of a big goal or dream that you want to achieve, it’s natural to think of all of the obstacles that will come your way.

He was broke and had no future. But he took a blank check and wrote out $10 million dollars to himself for acting services rendered and dated it five year in the future.

Subsequently, he carried that check in his wallet at all times and looked at it every morning, visualizing receiving $10 million. Five years after he wrote the check to himself, he found out that he was going to earn $10 million from the movie “Dumb and Dumber.”

Consider two other examples:

  • Boxing champion and legend Muhammad Ali was always stressing the importance of seeing himself victorious long before the actual fight. 
  • Michael Jordan always took the last shot in his mind before he ever took one in real life.

As the examples demonstrate, you to can visualize and create an image of what you most desire. You create a detailed mental scene of what it looks like as you achieve your goal. Visualize it happening now, and the scene that is playing out.

There is a big difference in imaging your goals and making them feel so real your mind believes it has already happened. The more you surround yourself with imagery or words related to your goal, the more real it will become to you.

To make any habit stick, you need to continue to do that habit. The same goes for visualization, the more you practice the quicker you will be in the frame of mind that helps pave the way to success.

Visualization is extremely powerful in helping you achieve success and realize your goals. However, you will still need to put in the hard work and dedication. Don’t forget to repeat, repeat, repeat!

  • Picture yourself victorious – If you can’t see it, then it’s not going to happen. In order to achieve your biggest goals and dreams, you have to picture yourself victorious. You have to look beyond your current circumstances and past failures. While visualizing, it’s necessary to visualize as many details as you can. Re-create any feelings that are in alignment with your dreams. Make it part of your daily routine. You will be amazed at the improvement in your life and astounded when your dream is realized.
  • Create a vision board. – A vision board gives you the opportunity to actually see your goals. This vision board can be a poster board, a piece of paper, the back of a cardboard box, or anything. On the vision board, put pictures that illustrate what you desire in your life. On your vision board, you can also post quotes that embodied what you want and read them every single day.
  • Utilize the power of a trigger card – Your biggest goal and dream can be placed on a note card to serve as your trigger card. From your 3×5 index cards, read daily the goal you desire most. Get in the habit of doing this every day. Each morning and each night, read those index cards, close your eyes, and imagine yourself accomplishing and following through on that major goal of yours.

Get in the habit of putting together a positive vision into your everyday life. Visualize yourself succeeding, achieving every goal, accomplishing every task. The key is to make your positive vision stronger than anything that can set you back. The more vivid you can get, the better it will work for you. Start thinking of your personal goals in life. Spend about 10 to 15 minutes picturing yourself achieving each one.

Get as detailed as possible. Picture what you will do once your goal is reached. How amazing does it feel? How will this change the course of your life? Remember, the little details increase the likelihood of the big picture.

It’s important to understand that visualization alone isn’t enough. But, it is an integral part of the process of you becoming the best version of yourself. That’s the power of visualizing your dreams. That’s the power of dreaming. That’s the power of relentlessly believing and working toward your vision every single day.

If you can’t visualize yourself being extremely successful, dominating your profession, and running a phenomenal business, then chances are you never will.

Patience is ofter referred to as the most underused investing skill and virute. And, learning patience could help you reach your financial goals of wealth building and finacial freedom.

Be extremely patient when investing in assets and wait until you can buy an investment at an entry price when everybody else hates the investment or are extremely pessimistic about the prospects of the investment.

In other words, wait until you can buy the asset at a extremely discounted price.  Keep in mind that every investment is affected by what you pay for it.  The less you pay, the better your rate of return on that investment.  Never, Never, Never…overpay for an investment.

People feel losses twice as much as they feel gains.

Successful investors develop a number of valuable skills over their lifetimes. And many report that patience is the most important skill to learn and master, but often it goes underused.

We’re not born patient. But, patience can be learned and, if you’re an investor, learning it could help you reach your financial goals.

Patience often involves staying calm in situations where you lack control. Even if we’re patient in some parts of life, we have to practice and adapt to be patient in new situations. Just because you’re a patient person while waiting in line at the DMV doesn’t mean you’re a patient investor.

Why Is it so Hard to Be Patient?
Simply put, your brain makes it hard to be patient. Human beings were designed to react to threats, either real or perceived. Stressful situations trigger a physiological response in people. You’ve likely heard this called the “fight-or-flight” response — either attack or run away, whatever helps alleviate the threat.

The problem is, your body doesn’t recognize the difference between true physical danger (during which fighting or fleeing would actually be helpful) and psychological triggers, like scary movies. Being patient is difficult because it means overcoming these natural instincts. Turbulent financial markets can trigger the response too but, unlike scary movies, there can be real-world impacts you’ll need patience to overcome.

When markets are seesawing and you’re overwhelmed with negative financial media, as we experienced this year during the pandemic-driven bear market, your brain perceives a threat to your financial well-being. Even though stock market volatility isn’t a physical threat, the fight-or-flight response kicks in, emotion takes over, and your brain starts telling you to do something. Your investment portfolio is being harmed! Take action! Now! With investing, action too often translates into selling something because selling feels like you’re shielding your portfolio from further harm. But selling at the wrong time — like in the middle of a major downturn — is one of the biggest investment mistakes you can make.

Impatient investors let anxiety and emotion rule their decision-making. Their tendency towards “doing something” can lead to detrimental investing behaviors: checking account balances too often, focusing on short-term volatility, selling or buying at the wrong time or abandoning a long-term strategic investment plan. And those bad behaviors could damage investors’ long-term returns.

Selling out of the market during a correction might feel like you’re taking prudent action. And you may even derive some pleasure in seeing the market continue to fall after you’ve sold your equities. But that pleasure could soon be replaced by regret, because consistently and correctly timing the market by selling and buying back in at the right time requires an incredible amount of luck — and we don’t know any investors who have that much luck.

Investment entry point and investor patience are super-important too.

Benjamin Graham, known as the “father of value investing,” knew the importance of patience in investing. Patience and investing are actually natural partners. Investing is a long-term prospect, the benefits of which typically come after many years. Patience, too, is a behavior where the benefits are mostly long-term. To be patient is to endure some short-term hardship for a future reward.

Racial Economic Disparity vs. Economic Inclusion

Wealth inequality, also known as the wealth gap, is a measure of the distribution of wealth—essentially the difference between the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor, according to World Population Review. American household wealth—the value of assets subtracted by the liabilities and debts owed—may have increased largely in the form of equity, mutual funds, and similar investments, but not equally among all Americans.

Wealth inequality is closely related to income inequality, which tracks the money people earn. However, wealth inequality includes not just income, but also the value of bank accounts, stocks and investments, homes, and personal possessions such as cars, jewelry, artwork, and other valuables. Wealth inequality is a major cause of unequal living standards in many communities.

The Federal Reserve’s statistics have confirmed the racial inequity gap related to income and wealth disparities. In its 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances, white families were reported to have had a median wealth level of $188,200, substantially larger than the median Black family’s wealth level of $24,100.

“These disparities still stand from a racism that’s systemic. It can be traced from employment to small businesses and wealth and still exist today in ways that still damage our country’s health,” Cleveland-based artist Chris Webb said.

The central bank is studying racial inequities in the U.S. economy. The Federal Reserve says it can only do so much to address earnings and wealth disparities, but feels an obligation to at least research the economic implications of uneven economic outcomes in the U.S.

While the assets of white households are equally split between real estate, equity and mutual fund shares, pensions, and other assets, the assets of other racial groups are less diversified. Almost two-thirds of Black wealth is composed of real estate and pensions, with 38% coming from pension assets alone. Similarly, 61% of Hispanic wealth and 56% of wealth from other races is composed of just these two asset types.

Additionally, according to data from the Census Bureau, 35% of white Americans are 55 and older, whereas only 24% of Black Americans are and only 16% of Hispanic Americans are. Hence, a part of the reason why wealth ownership is much lower among Black and Hispanic Americans may be due to the fact that they are relatively younger on average than white Americans. Black and Hispanic populations may be younger for a variety of reasons, including differences in life expectancy—Black Americans’ life expectancy is 3.5 years less than that of white Americans—as well as immigration trends.

The white population is more likely to be older, has earned more income over their lifetime and hold more wealth than Black and Hispanic populations.

In summary, the causes of wealth inequality in America remains deeply rooted and are systemic. And, the results of wealth inequality in America persists even today.

Build Wealth in 2022: Dave Ramsey

According to a recent survey, eight out of 10 of everyday millionaires invested in their employer’s 401(k) plan, and that simple step was a key to their wealth building. Not only that, but three out of four of those surveyed invested money in brokerage accounts outside of their company plans.

Moreover, they didn’t risk their money on single-stock investments or “an opportunity they couldn’t pass up.” In fact, no millionaire in the study said single-stock investing was a big factor in their financial success. Single stocks didn’t even make the top three list of factors for reaching their net worth.

The people in the study became millionaires by consistently saving over time. In fact, they worked, saved and invested for an average of 28 years before hitting the million-dollar mark, and most of them reached that milestone at age 49.

Dreams of trips to visit grandkids, travel adventures, and family celebrations at your paid-for home. That’s the kind of retirement many Americans dream about. You don’t have to earn six figures to turn this dream into a reality. But you do have to live and plan today with that goal in mind.

It’s important to get started building wealth no matter how old you are. Depending on your income and current financial circumstances, it might take some folks longer than others. But the fact is, you will get there if you do these five things over and over again.

Here are the five keys to building wealth:

1. Have a Written Plan for Your Money (aka a Budget)

No one “accidentally” wins at anything—and you are not the exception! If you want to build wealth, you have to plan for it. And that’s exactly what a budget is—it’s just a written plan for your money.

You have to sit down at the start of each month and give every dollar an assignment—and then stick to it! When our team completed The National Study of Millionaires, we found that 93% of millionaires said they stick to the budgets they create. Ninety-three percent! Getting on a budget is the foundation of any wealth-building plan.     

2. Get Out (and Stay Out) of Debt

According to Dave Ramsey, the only “good debt” is paid-off debt. Your most powerful wealth-building tool is your income. And when you spend your whole life sending loan payments to banks and credit card companies, you end up with less money to save and invest for your future. It’s time to break the cycle!

Trying to save and invest while you’re still in debt is like running a marathon with your feet chained together. That’s dumb with a capital D! Get debt out of your life first. Then you can start thinking about building wealth.

3. Live on Less Than You Make

Proverbs 21:20 says that in the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a man devours all he has. Translation? Wealthy people don’t blow all their money on stupid stuff. The myth that millionaires live lavish lifestyles that include Ferraris in their garage and lobster dinners every night is just that—a foolish myth. 

Here’s the truth: 94% of the millionaires we studied said they live on less than they make. The typical millionaire has never carried a credit card balance in their entire lives, spends $200 or less on restaurants each month, and still shops with coupons—even after reaching millionaire status!1 So ask yourself: Do you want to act rich or actually become rich? The choice is yours.

4. Save for Retirement

According to The National Study of Millionaires, 3 out of 4 millionaires (75%) said that regular, consistent investing over a long period of time is the reason for their success. They don’t get distracted by market swings or trendy stocks or get-rich-quick schemes—they actually save money and invest!

Being debt-free and having money in the bank to cover emergencies gives you the foundation you need to start saving for retirement. Once you get to that point, invest 15% of your gross income into retirement accounts like a 401(k) and Roth IRA. When you do that month after month, decade after decade, you know what you’re going to have in your nest egg? Money! Lots of it!

5. Be Outrageously Generous

Don’t miss this, y’all. At the end of the day, true financial peace is having the freedom to live and give like no one else. When you write a plan for your money, get rid of debt, live on less than you make, and start investing for the future, you can be as generous as you want to be and help change the world around you.

But when you make giving a part of your life, it doesn’t just change those around you—it changes you. Studies have shown over and over again that generosity leads to more happiness, contentment and a better quality of life.3 You can’t put a price tag on that!

How to Build Wealth at Any Age

That’s some big-picture financial advice that works no matter how old you are or how much money you make. It’s also true that each decade of your life will have specific challenges and opportunities. So let’s break things down decade by decade to see what you can do to maximize your savings potential.

In fact, the majority of millionaires didn’t even grow up around a lot of money. According to the survey, eight out of 10 millionaires come from families at or below middle-income level. Only 2% of millionaires surveyed said they came from an upper-income family.

The National Study of Millionaires showed a dramatic difference between how Americans think wealthy people get their money and how they actually earn and spend their money.

The salaries wealthy people make is not as much as you might think. The majority of millionaires in the study didn’t have high-level, high-salary jobs. In fact, only 15% of millionaires were in senior leadership roles, such as vice president or C-suite roles (CEO, CFO, COO, etc.). Ninety-three percent (93%) of millionaires said they got their wealth because they worked hard, and saved for the future and invested for the long term, not because they had big salaries.

In his book, Covey argues that it’s your character that needs to be cultivated to achieve effectiveness and sustainable success, not your personality and behavior. Effectively, what we are says far more than what we say or do.

Character is closely related to moral and ethical values. It focuses on the traits that are unique to a person. Character is often regarded as the true self, meaning that it represents deep rooted attributes possessed by a person.

While, personality is often referred to as the mask identity of a person. It is reflected by the outer appearance and behavior that may or may not be true to inner character.

In a nutshell, the seven habits of highly effective people are:

  1. You take initiative. “Be proactive.”
  2. You focus on goals. “Begin with the end in mind.”
  3. You set priorities. “Put first things first.”
  4. You only win when others win. “Think win/win.”
  5. You communicate. “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”
  6. You cooperate. “Synergize.”
  7. You reflect on and repair your deficiencies…you focus on your well-being. “Sharpen the saw.”

In short, you are what you habitually do, so adopt productive habits. You have the ability to improve your habits and your life.

Covey’s seven habits are composed of the primary principles of character upon which happiness and success are based. Rather than focusing on altering the outward manifestations of your behavior and attitudes, it aims to adapt your inner core, character, and motives.

Your character is a composite of your habits, which factors heavily in your life. Because habits are consistent, unconscious patterns, they constantly express your character and result in your effectiveness or ineffectiveness. Habits are deeply ingrained and you are constantly pulled in their direction. Breaking deeply imbedded, habitual tendencies such as procrastination, impatience, criticalness or selfishness that inhibit effectiveness involves more than simple willpower or a few minor changes.

A habit is the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire:

  • Knowledge is the theoretical paradigm, the what to do and the why.

Habit 1: Be Proactive – Principle: I am free to choose and am responsible for my choices.

Your life doesn’t just “happen.” Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. You choose sadness. You choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results.

Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can’t keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are “response-able.” They don’t blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior.

All external forces act as stimuli that we respond to. Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power–you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive person uses proactive language–I can, I will, I prefer, etc.

Being proactive means more than taking initiative. It means we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind – Principle: Mental creation precedes physical creation.

Sometimes people find themselves achieving victories that are empty–successes that have come at the expense of things that were far more valuable to them. If your ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step you take gets you to the wrong place faster.

Habit 2 is based on imagination–the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes. It is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There is a mental (first) creation, and a physical (second) creation. The physical creation follows the mental, just as a building follows a blueprint.

If you don’t make a conscious effort to visualize who you are and what you want in life, then you empower other people and circumstances to shape you and your life by default. It’s about connecting again with your own uniqueness and then defining the personal, moral, and ethical guidelines within which you can most happily express and fulfill yourself.

Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.

Covey states that the most effective way to begin with the end in mind is to create a personal mission statement. It should focus on the following:

  • What you want to be (character)
  • What you want to do (contributions and achievements)
  • The values upon which both of these things are based

In time, your mission statement will become your personal constitution. It becomes the basis from which you make every decision in your life. By making principles the center of your life, you create a solid foundation from which to flourish.

To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. You need to know where you are going in order to better understand where you are now so that the steps you take are always in the right direction. 

Habit 3: Put First Things First – Principle: Effectiveness requires the integrity to act on your priorities.

Habit one encourages you to realize you are in charge of your own life, and habit two is based on the ability to visualize and to identify your key values. Habit 3 is the practical fulfillment of Habits 1 and 2. Habit 1 says, “You are the creator. You are in charge.” Habit 2 is the first mental creation, based on imagination, the ability to envision what you can become. Habit 3 is the second creation, the physical creation. It focuses on the practice of effective self-management. By asking yourself the above questions, you become aware that you have the power to significantly change your life in the present.

To live a more balanced existence, you have to recognize that saying no to everything that comes along is okay. There’s no need to overextend yourself. All it takes is realizing that it’s all right to say no when necessary and then focus on your highest priorities.

Habit three concerns itself with putting the most important things first. This means cultivating the ability to say no to things that don’t match your guiding principles. To manage your time effectively, your behaviors and actions must adhere to the following habit 5 concepts:

  1. They must be principle-centered.
  2. They must be conscience-directed, meaning that they give you the opportunity to organize your life in accordance with your core values.
  3. They define your key mission, which includes your values and long-term goals.
  4. They give balance to your life.
  5. They are organized weekly, with daily adaptations as needed.

The focus is on improving relationships and results, not on maximizing your time.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win – Principle: Effective, long-term relationships require mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Think Win-Win is a character-based code for human interaction and collaboration.

Win-win sees life as a cooperative arena, not a competitive one. Win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. Win-win means agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying.

To adopt a win/win mindset, you must cultivate the habit of interpersonal leadership. This involves exercising each of the following traits when interacting with others:

  • Self-awareness
  • Imagination
  • Conscience
  • Independent will

To be an effective win/win leader, Covey argues that you must embrace five independent dimensions:

  1. Character: This is the foundation upon which a win/win mentality is created, and it means acting with integrity, maturity, and an “abundance mentality” (i.e., there is plenty of everything for everyone, one person’s success doesn’t threaten your success).
  2. Relationships: Trust is essential to achieving win/win agreements. You must nourish your relationships to maintain a high level of trust.
  3. Agreements: This means that the parties involved must agree on the desired results, guidelines, resources, accountability, and the consequences.
  4. Win/win performance agreements and supportive systems: Creating a standardized, agreed-upon set of desired results to measure performance within a system that can support a win/win mindset.
  5. Processes: All processes must allow for win/win solutions to arise.

Win/Win is not a technique; it’s a total philosophy. This frame of mind and heart constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. It’s not your way or my way; it’s a better way, a higher way.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood – Principle: To communicate effectively, we must first understand each other.

Communication is the most important skill in life. You spend years learning how to read and write, and years learning how to speak. But what about listening?

If you’re like most people, you probably seek first to be understood; you want to get your point across. And in doing so, you may ignore the other person completely, pretend that you’re listening, selectively hear only certain parts of the conversation or attentively focus on only the words being said, but miss the meaning entirely.

Seek first to understand involves a deep shift in paradigm. We typically seek first to be understood. Instead, most people listen to the reply. They’re either speaking or preparing to speak. 

Habit 6: Synergize – Principle: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

To put it simply, synergy means “two heads are better than one.” Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems.

Synergy is the highest activity in all life – the true test and manifestation of all the other habits combined. Synergy catalyzes, unifies, and unleashes the greatest powers within people. Simply defined, synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. 

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw – Principle: To maintain and increase effectiveness, we must renew ourselves in body, heart, mind, and spirit.

Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have–you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life:

  • Physical: exercise, nutrition and sleep
  • Social/Emotional: meaningful human connections and relationships
  • Mental: learning, visualizing, acquiring new knowledge, growing
  • Spiritual: mindfulness, art, meditation, music, time in nature, prayer and service

As you renew yourself in each of the four areas, you create growth and change in your life. Sharpen the Saw keeps you fresh so you can continue to practice the other six habits. You increase your capacity to produce and handle the challenges around you. Without this renewal, the body becomes weak, the mind mechanical, the emotions raw, the spirit insensitive, and the person selfish.

Feeling good doesn’t just happen. Living a life in balance means taking the necessary time to renew yourself. Remember that every day provides a new opportunity for renewal–a new opportunity to recharge yourself instead of hitting the wall. All it takes is the desire, knowledge, and skill.

Habit 7 makes all of the other Habits possible. When you sharpen the saw, you preserve and enhance the greatest asset you have – yourself. 

In conclusion, real change comes not from the outside in, but from the inside out, explains Covey. And the most fundamental way of changing yourself is through a paradigm shift.

There are so many people out there who are excelling in their work lives but failing miserably in their personal lives. They’re a success story on the outside but their lives are falling apart. Their problems are deep and painful. A quick fix doesn’t work in this case. To change such situations, you have to improve yourself and your mindset.

A paradigm is a way you see and perceive the world. Like a map of a territory, a paradigm is a model of something else. Two people can see the same thing and interpret it differently, and they’ll both be correct. It’s not logical but psychological.

Your paradigms affect the way you interact with people.

Building Black Wealth Insights Study – U.S. Bank

The racial wealth gap constrains the U.S. economy as a whole, resulting in $1-1.5 trillion in lost economic output and a 4-6% drag on America’s GDP.

The racial wealth gap in America is not just a ‘Black problem.’ It’s a problem that effects all Americans and is an ‘all of us’ challenge to remedy, according to U.S. Bank. “Extreme disparities and their persistent harm reach into every American’s future. We can all be energized by the opportunity to provide the tools of financial prosperity for Black families and other historically disadvantaged members of the American fabric because those benefits will be felt throughout our entire country. By working to close the racial wealth gap, we’re creating economic prosperity – more jobs, economic vitality – it’s better for business, for families and for communities. The racial wealth gap must be closed if we are to achieve our full potential as a nation,” says Greg Cunningham, SEVP, Chief Diversity Officer U.S. Bank

Building wealth and achieving financial security is a primary aspiration for most, but many communities, especially the African American community, face distinct systematic challenges in reaching these goals. And, the financial industry has an important role to play in eliminating the barriers and closing the racial wealth gap.

While everyone has a unique definition of financial security, it’s often defined as having peace of mind that their income is enough to cover both expected and unforeseen expenses.

U.S. Bank’s Building Black Wealth Insights Study attempts to understanding the needs, goals and challenges of the Black community. This research highlights many steps the financial industry must pursue to better serve the Black community, according to Gunjan Kedia, Vice Chairman, U.S. Bank Wealth Management and Investment Services.

In the United States, Black households hold significantly less wealth than white households, and over the last several decades, that gap continued to grow.2 While there has been some improvement, the net wealth of the average Black family today is less than 15 percent of that of a white family.1

The overall conclusion is that more work needs to be done to narrow the wealth gap; in fact, a 2018 analysis published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis posited, “no progress has been made in reducing income and wealth inequalities between Black and white households over the past 70 years.”3

Also, according to the Q2 2021 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the median weekly earnings for Black men were $877, or 78.7 percent of the median for white men ($1,115).4

It may come as no surprise, then, that our survey found Black affluent respondents feel they are at a disadvantage compared to rest of the population. Nearly twice as many Black affluent individuals as Hispanic individuals in the survey stated they had been treated differently by the financial services industry due to their race – and nearly four times as many compared to Asian and white individuals.

Despite these barriers, we found that Black affluent individuals are more likely than non-Black (white, Hispanic and Asian) affluent respondents to:

  • Have clearly defined financial goals.
  • Have a strong financial plan that helps guide their decisions.
  • Believe they are better at managing their finances than their parents.
  • Be more comfortable discussing money matters freely with friends and family.

U.S. financial institutions must acknowledge that they played a historical role in creating and sustaining present and persistent gaps in wealth by race and ethnicity. According to the Federal Reserve’s 2019 report, there is an 8:1 gap in wealth between white and Black families, and a 5:1 gap in wealth between white and Hispanic families.1 Financial institutions must not only acknowledges this history, but be willing to leverage the unique skills and expertise of its they possess to build wealth in African American communities and help close those gaps.

U.S. financial institutions must make a commitment to address this persistent racial wealth gap.

To help build wealth, banks and financial institutions must reduce actual and perceived barriers to their services, and redefine how they intend to serve the special needs of racially diverse communities. They must make a commitment to support businesses owned by people of color, help individuals and communities of color advance economically, and enhance career opportunities for employees and prospective employees

It must start by banks and financial institutions listening to and learning from their diverse customers and communities. “We are starting with the Black community, because that is where the wealth gap is greatest. We’ll continue to listen and learn in order to take steps to support lasting change,” explains Mark Jordahl, President U.S. Bank Wealth Management.

Despite the historical and current barriers faced by Black individuals, there are abundant opportunities by banks and financial institutions to cl,ose the wealth gap. And,
there is still much that industry leaders can do to support Black affluent individuals – and Black individuals at all economic levels. A few thought starters, according to U.S. Bank, are:

  • Advisor training – Ensure employees at all levels are trained to recognize their own individual biases and to treat all individuals with fairness – whether they’re greeting someone at a bank counter or considering approval for a loan product.
  • Advisor awareness – Acknowledge that working with a financial advisor may be uncomfortable for someone doing it for the first time or someone who has had a prior negative encounter. Consider how words and actions can impact an experience and commit to training client-facing advisors to enhance the client experience, especially for those from different backgrounds.
  • Diverse advisors – Know that representation matters. Expand hiring and retention efforts to ensure diversity doesn’t just occur at entry-level positions, but through all levels of client-facing roles and leadership.
  • Tailored advice – As with any customer, avoid making assumptions about financial goals and ensure financial planning advice takes into consideration the priorities of the individual or family. Examples may include ensuring current lifestyle needs are met, helping the next generation and leaving a legacy. Make real estatepart of the conversation and ensure fair mortgage lending.

Nearly 22 Million Americans are Millionaires

There are nearly 22 million individuals in the U.S. with financial and real assets to fit the definition of being a millionaire, according to a 2021 Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report. Overall in 2020, total global wealth grew by 7.4% and wealth per adult rose by 6% to reach another record high of USD 79,952, according to the report.

Net worth, or “wealth,” is defined as the value of financial assets plus real assets (principally housing) owned by households, minus their debts.

The core reasons for asset price increases which have led to major gains in household wealth are a result of significant monetary and fiscal intervention by governments and central banks, like the U.S. Federal Reserve. Many governments and central banks in more advanced economies have taken pre-emptive action to prevent an economic recession in two primary ways: first, by organizing massive income transfer programs to support the individuals and businesses most adversely affected by the pandemic, and second, by lowering interest rates – often to levels close to zero – and making it clear that interest rates will stay low for some time.

There is little doubt that these interventions have been highly successful in meeting their immediate objectives of countering the economic impact of the pandemic. However, they have come at a cost. Public debt relative to GDP has risen in the U.S. and throughout the world by 20 percentage points or more, according to a 2021 Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report.

In essence, there has been a huge transfer from the government coffers to household net worth, which is one of the reasons why household wealth has been so resilient. In one respect, these transfers generously compensated households.

Generous payments have meant that disposable household income has been relatively stable and has even risen. In combination with restricted consumption opportunities, this has led to a surge in household saving, which has inflated household financial assets and caused household debts to be lower than they would be otherwise. This increase in savings was an important source of household wealth growth last year.

The lowering of interest rates by central banks has probably had the greatest impact on the growth in household wealth. It is a major reason why share prices and house prices have flourished, and these translate directly into our valuations of household wealth.

However, there are inflation implications in the long term from lowering the interest rates and also increased equity market volatility linked to expected future rises in interest rates. However, these were deemed relatively unimportant at the time compared to the more immediate economic challenges caused by the pandemic.

Household wealth appears to have simply continued to grow, paying little or no attention to the economic turmoil that should have hampered progress. Effectively, financial assets accounted for most of the gain in total household wealth accumulation.

The wealth of those with a higher share of equities among their assets, e.g. wealthier households in general. And, home owners in most markets, on the other hand, have seen capital gains due to rising house prices.

Wealth is a key component of the economic system. It is used as a store of resources for future consumption, particularly during retirement. Wealth also enhances opportunities when used either directly or as collateral for loans. But, most of all, wealth is valued for its capacity to reduce vulnerability to shocks such as unemployment, ill health, natural disasters or indeed a pandemic.

The contrast between those who have access to an emergency buffer and those who do not is evident at the best of times. Household wealth has played a crucial role in determining the resilience of both nations and individuals

Roughly 1% of adults in the world are USD millionaires.

Global household wealth may well have fallen. But aggressive governments and central banks to intervene help mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic. These have led to rapid share price and house price rises that have benefited those in the upper wealth echelons. In contrast, those in the lower wealth bands have tended to stand still, or, in many cases, regressed. The net result has been a marked rise in inequality

In many countries, the overall level of wealth remains below levels recorded before 2016. Some of the underlying factors may self-correct over time. For example, interest rates will begin to rise again at some point, and this will dampen asset prices.

Wealth and Financial Freedom Mindset

A major factor regarding effectively managing your money and achieving financial freedom is maintaining a positive and confident mindset. Maintaining a positive growth mindset takes effort and knowledge. Here are some ways to start thinking about financial matters and building wealth:

Focus On What You Want – And Take It! So many people are too timid to admit they want something and go for it. When there is something that you want to accomplish don’t think “I could never actually do that”, think “I could do that and I WILL do that”. Play to win, not to avoid defeat.

This doesn’t mean to have to become a selfish jerk. What it means is becoming more assertive and honest with yourself. You don’t have to grab off other people. There is a big pot of unclaimed gold in the middle of the table — why shouldn’t you be the one to claim it? You deserve it!

Confront closely-held beliefs. Spend some time dissecting and understanding the previously-held beliefs you have about money. You learn a lot about money from your family at a young age—either that money is good or money is evil, for example.

Some people may grow up believing that money is a scarce resource, while others understand money as a tool. There are many numbers of qualities that get assigned to money that are not objectively true.

If you have major fear or shame regarding money, you may want to consider working through these emotions with a financial therapist. Your feelings are valid—but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them.

Integrate affirmations into your daily routine. You may find affirmations to be a grounding part of your day. For example, affirmations such as “I am worthy of wealth,” “I am capable of managing my money,” and “There is money out there to be made by me” could act as helpful reminders that you are in charge of your money and not the other way around.

To develop a positive mindset and to become a person who is “good with money”, it is essential to understand that achieving financial freedom and accumulating wealth is a journey. So, consider taking it step by step. Start by building familiarity with your financial situation, and look for small ways to improve it and make it better every day.

Don’t Spend Your Money – Invest It. The reason you need to save your money is to grow it by investing it for the long term. Millionaires tend to be frugal people, and that’s because they know the true value of money is in investing. Being your own boss goes hand-in-hand with building wealth. You’ll want to quit your regular job at some point.

Bottomline is to stop working for your money and invest, which puts your money to work for you.

Rather than buying yourself a new iPad, that $500 could be used to invest in the stock market. Find the right shares (more on that later), and that money could easily double within a year.

2021 Women and Investing Study | Fidelity Investments

More women than ever are taking a seat at the investing table, according to Fidelity Investments.

Fidelity Investments’ 2021 Women and Investing Study was conducted “to gather insights into women’s attitudes and behaviors when it comes to managing their finances” and investing for the long term. The study findings show:

  • 67% of women are now investing outside of retirement
  • 50% of women say they are more interested in investing since the start of the pandemic
  • 42% say they now have more to invest since the start of the pandemic

When women do decide to invest, they are realizing positive results and returns. Analysis of more than 5 million Fidelity customers over the last ten years finds that, on average, women tend to outperform their male counterparts by 40 basis points or 0.4%.

While these investing trends by women are encouraging, still only 1/3 of women see themselves as investors, and additionally:

    Only 42% feel confident in their ability to save for the long term, including retirement
    Only 33% feel confident in their ability make investment decisions
    Only 35% feel confident their non-retirement savings are invested appropriately
    Only 14% of women say they know a lot about saving and investing

Overall, women feel less confident when it comes to long-term financial planning and investing to grow their money and build wealth, according to Fidelity Investments.

Women who set financial goals, create a financial plan and take the following additional actions feel more confident in their ability to save for the future and make investment decisions to help their savings grow:

  • Determine current financial status (net worth and cash flow)
  • Pay themselves first, automate their savings and invest consistently a portion of every paycheck
  • Select diversified investments like stocks, bonds, mutual funds or ETFs
  • Take a long-term approach to investing
  • Starting early and track progress regularly
  • Making time to educate themselves about personal finance topics

Bottomline, 64% of women surveyed by Fidelity said that they would like to be more active in their finances, including investment decisions. Not surprisingly, the factors that holds them back include:

  • 70% of women say to invest they would need to know more about picking individual stocks.
  • 65% of women say they’d be more likely to invest, or invest more, if they had clear plan or steps to do so.

It’s never too late for you to get started setting financial goals, creating a financial plan and investing for the long term.
